Statistics about WOMEN IN PHYSICS in Argentina

We are trying to put together information on the situation of women in Physics in Argentina, including both undergraduate and graduate studies and the subsequent occupations of female physicists. The information is far from being complete. For this reason we request that anybody who can add extra information to please provide it to us. You can send it by e-mail to Silvina Ponce Dawson at silvina@df.uba.ar
or to Karen Hallberg at karen@cab.cnea.gov.ar  People that have collaborated to gather this information are: Mirta Gil, Maria Cristina Caracoche, Inés Casper, Karen Hallberg, Patricia Levstein, Hilda Lanza, Liliana Rojana, Luciana Bruno, Ana Maria Quintanilla, Silvina Ponce Dawson, Guillermo Dussel, Raúl Bolmaro and Francisco Tamarit. Part of this information has been retrieved from the web pages of the corresponding institutions.

Based on the information we have collected so far and on our personal experience, Karen and I (Silvina) have written two pages on the situation of female physicists in Argentina, which you can download as a postscript file.

Statistics about female scientists in general has been collected by the national Secretariat for Technology, Science and Productive Innovation (SETCIP) and can be found at  http://www.setcip.gov.ar/indicadores99/cap5_99.htm

Asociación Física Argentina.

The Asociación Física Argentina is the Argentine equivalent of the American Physical Society. There is a total of  880 members,  among them, 259 women (29%). These numbers include both active and student members. AFA authorities are renewed periodically and all active members vote for lists of candidates. The Association has a three-member executive committee. Right now, all of them are men, as it has been the case for the last 20 years. Besides the executive committee, there are representatives of different geographical regions (there is a total of 8 regions with 2 representatives each). There are 5 women among these 16 regional representatives, all of them occupying substitute positions (vocales suplentes).

Undergraduate studies in Physics

Undergraduate studies in Physics (Licenciatura en Física) can be pursued at the Universities listed below. All of these Universities offer the degree of "Licenciado en Física" (something that is in between a bachelor and a MSc of an American University). In principle, students should  obtain this degree after five years of studying. However, in many places, students take much longer (see e.g. the statistics about the University of Buenos Aires). Some of these Universities also offer shorter careers in Physics but it is not very common for students to follow them. On average, about 28% of the total number of people who got their Licenciatura degree in Physics at national universities of Argentina  between 1990 and 1999 were women.

Instituto Balseiro.

This is a unique institution in the country. It is run jointly by the Universidad de Cuyo and Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica. Students can follow a career in Physics or in Nuclear Engineering, but it is required that they have already approved 2 years of some related undergraduate career at another institution. Students must take an exam to be accepted at the Institute. Once they are accepted, they live within the premises of the Institute in Bariloche (a very nice place by the Patagonian Andes and a beautiful lake) and receive a scholarship to support their expenses. Students from all over the country apply to this institute.

Graduate studies in Physics.

Graduate studies in physics can be pursued at the above mentioned institutions. On average, about 27% of the students that obtained their PhD's at National Universities between 1990 and 1999 were female.

Here we provide the information we could collect from some of these places regarding graduate studies in physics:

Funding Agencies.

National Funding Agencies:

Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (National Research Council, CONICET).

CONICET has a similar structure to that of the French CNRS. It is not just a funding agency, but there are researchers that are employed by CONICET to do their research. Over here we only quote the information regarding research projects that are funded by CONICET, the structure of the various committees that are in charge of deciding both which projects are to be funded, the award of scholarships, the hiring of new researchers (ingreso a Carrera del Investigador) and the evaluation and promotions within "Carrera del Investigador". Members of Carrera del Investigador have to turn in a report on their activities periodically. When doing this, they can also apply for a "promotion" (a change to higher category of Carrera del Investigador). Both for the evaluation of reports and all sorts of applications (scholarships, entrance into the Carrera del Investigador, etc) are first evaluated by a "Comision ad hoc", whose composition is changed periodically. Members of this committee send the applications to external reviewers and then elaborate a ranking among applicants, or decide on the qualification of the report or the promotion. These committees turn in their results to a more permanent advisory committee that involves all exact and natural sciences, which, in turn, elevates their results to the  "Junta de Calificacion y Promocion", which
involves all the areas that are covered by the activities of CONICET (both "hard" and "soft" sciences). These higher instances of the review process  involve people from various disciplines. In such a case, we have restricted the counting to those that are physicists or astronomers. All decisions are finally approved by a Directorate in conjunction with the president of CONICET. All the information provided in these tables  has been obtained at the web page of  CONICET .

Agencia Nacional para la Promoción de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (ANPCyT).

This is a purely funding agency.  Projects are evaluated by external reviewers. Afterwards, there is an evaluation committee, whose compositon changes every year , which decides the final ranking among projects presented within a certain area. Projects in basic Physics are evaluated with projects in Mathematics and Astronomy. Applied areas such as technology or environment are evaluated by other committees. Information about these applied areas is not included in the tables provided below because, given that they are highly interdisciplinary, it is hard to distinguish what the degree of the people involved is. All the information provided in these tables has been obtained from the web page of ANPCyT .

This includes both national and foreign researchers that work either in Argentina or abroad.

Others:

There are other public funding agencies, some of which are supported by provincial states (such as CIC that belongs to the province of Buenos Aires or Agencia Córdoba, that belongs to the province of Córdoba). Also, national universities have special lines of funding, which are restricted to members of that particular university. Finally, there are some private agencies that fund research projects in physics, such as Fundación Antorchas or Fundación Estenssoro. We will put the information on some of these other agencies soon.

Comisión Nacional de Energíca Atómica (National Atomic Energy Commission)

The Atomic Energy Commission  ( Comisión Nacional de Energíca Atómica, CNEA) was created in 1950. Its principal aim is the development of pacific applications of nuclear energy. It has several sites spread all over the country. Some of these sites have physics departments where basic research is performed. Other sites are related to the medicinal application of nuclear energy.

Other public institutions

There are other national institutions where there is a relatively large number of physicists employed, such as INTI ( Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Industrial) and CITEFA ( Instituto de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de las Fuerzas Armadas). However, it is hard to find the information discriminated by career. For this reason, so far we do not have any information regarding the situation of female physicists in these institutions. There are also provincial agencies, with a structure similar to that of CONICET but at the provincial (state) level., among them CIC (Comisión de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Prov. of Buenos Aires). We haven't collected any information on these agencies yet.

Private sector

We do not have any statistics on how many people work at the private sector and which portion of these people corresponds to women physicists. In any case, it is not very common for physicists to work as physicists in the private sector.

Decision making positions in science.
Over here we are mainly interested on the proportion of female physicists as compared to male physicists in positions related to the management of institutions that are devoted to research and development. We have not collected much information about this yet.
